Statement from Ben Gummer on open government and the OGP

by Tim Hughes

Ben Gummer, who attended the Open Government Partnership (OGP) steering committee meeting and UN General Assembly events in New York at the end of September, has made the following statement about the UK’s continued commitment to open government and the OGP:

“The Open Government Partnership (OGP) has made significant progress to ensure that citizens are better connected to their governments, with greater access to data, and more opportunities to participate in the development and implementation of policies. The OGP is helping to redefine the relationship between the citizen and the state. The UK will continue to be at the forefront of Open Government. In an increasingly digital world, people want to see what their governments are doing and why. It is our job to meet this expectation head on. To do so we will continue to develop and use new technology and approaches.”

This is Ben Gummer’s first statement on open government and the OGP since being appointed Minister for the Cabinet Office three months ago. The Open Government Network is still awaiting response to our letter to the Minister sent two months ago.
